AB 727: Suicide Hotlines on Student ID Cards

Student Mental Health
Updated 2025-10-01

New requirement for schools to include crisis hotline numbers on student identification cards.

Overview

Assembly Bill 727 requires all public and private schools serving students in grades 7–12 to include crisis resource information on student identification cards.

Required Information

Student ID cards must include:

  1. 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — Call or text 988
  2. Crisis Text Line — Text HOME to 741741
  3. The Trevor Project — 1-866-488-7386 (for LGBTQ+ youth)

Implementation

  • Applies to all new and replacement student ID cards issued after the effective date
  • Schools are not required to recall or reprint existing cards
  • The information should be printed legibly on the front or back of the card

Why This Matters

Studies show that having crisis resources readily accessible can be a critical intervention point. Students in crisis may not seek help on their own, but having the information physically on hand reduces barriers.
